RIDE FOR YOUR L1FE

Documentary 2022

»Dedicated to every mother and father out there trying to raise a healthy child«

From the book ‘Not Dead Yet’ by Phil Southerland, 2011

The combination of diabetes and professional cycling — how’s that even possible? A chronic condition mixed with one of the toughest sports in the world. We followed the world’s first and only all-diabetes professional cycling team behind the scenes throughout the entire 2021 season as the world marked the centenary of the discovery of insulin. With the film, I wanted to give the audience full access and an insight to a life with diabetes as well as a spot in the peloton together with these heroes — because that’s what they are. Not only do they battle a chronic condition on a daily basis, but they’re also athletes out there competing at the highest level. Ride for your L1fe opened in March 2022 with an exclusive gala screening in Imperial followed by the world premiere at CPH:DOX.

ABOUT
The world’s first and only all-diabetes professional cycling team was formed to show what’s possible with type 1 diabetes. On top of racing against the best cyclists in the world, the riders need to manage daily injections of insulin to control blood glucose levels. Losing control can lead to severe complications and death. Ride for your L1fe follows the team behind the scenes throughout the entire 2021 season, as these diabetes pioneers fight for results, race for a spot on the podium and even for normality. Living with type1 diabetes means the team competes on the road and with their disease. Are ambitions and pioneer work enough to survive in professional cycling? Or will the race within the race come out on top? With full access to riders, mechanics, management, nutritionists and doctors, a film crew followed the team through battles, bruises and broken dreams in a film about dealing with the prejudices and the uncertainty of living with a chronic condition.
